Did you hear the latest in Santa-related news? It’s the age of innocence lost for little Santa letter writers.
The U.S. Postal Service will be dropping its popular Santa Letter Writing Program this year. Started in 1954 in a small town called North Pole, Alaska, the program allowed generations of children to write to Santa and receive a handwritten reply from Santa with a North Pole postmark.
The program relied on the commitment of thousands of volunteers all over the country to answer each piece of mail. Last year, however, postal workers realized that a registered sex offender had volunteered for the program.
This year, the Postal Service imposed tighter restrictions that included blacking out children’s names and addresses. The extra measure was intended to prevent volunteers from having access to children’s personal information as an additional safeguard for families. Unfortunately, the changes have made the program inadvertently cost prohibitive and too cumbersome for most local postal offices. More information here.
What do you think about the Postal Service dropping the Santa Letter Writing Program? Is it time for Santa to go online, perhaps?
Hello Kitty, everyone’s favorite, fashionable, kawaii (cute) kitty, turns a mind boggling 35 years old this year. Thirty-five never looked so good!
From coin purses…
to $150K bling…
Hello Kitty has grown into a global sensation over the decades. Sanrio launched Hello Kitty in Japan 35 years ago, but Hello Kitty continues to be as popular and trendy as ever all over the world.
In Taiwan, apparently, expectant moms can check into a Hello Kitty hospital for a relaxing birthing experience.
If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area this week, a café / shop / art space called Royal/T has a Hello Kitty exhibit that runs through Saturday, November 14th, 2009. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Come celebrate all things Hello Kitty and check out lots of eye popping, multi-dimensional displays.
Paris Hilton and Kimora Lee Simmons attended opening night at Royal/T several weeks ago, but the glamour and fun continues through the last day of the exhibit. On the evening of November 14th, check out the Hello Kitty fashion show.
For more information about the exbihit and events, contact:

Thanks to Jessica for bringing this newsflash to our attention!
MacLaren is about to announce a massive recall on November 10th (tomorrow) that should affect about 1 million strollers. This recall affects ALL MacLaren strollers purchased from 1999 to 2009.
Several reports involve children’s fingers being amputated from getting stuck in the hinges. MacLaren will make hinge covers available to all parents that contact the company through the MacLaren website or the company hotline.
In the meantime, parents are being asked to STOP using all MacLaren strollers until the hinge covers are installed.
It seems like a reasonable assumption that Google will keep the Sesame Street logos going until November the 10th which marks the official 40 year anniversary of Sesame Street.
Which of your favorite Sesame Street characters will Google feature next? My entirely non-substantiated guesses: Elmo has a pretty popular fan base as does Mr. Snuffleupagus. And what about Oscar the Grouch?
I supposed we’ll have to check back every day for the answers…
Sesame Street celebrates its 40th anniversary this month!
The first episode aired on November 10th, 1969. Today, Sesame Street is the longest running children’s television program in the US. With 39 seasons and 4,186 episodes to date, Sesame Street continues to remain a rite of passage for generations of children.
Even Google is celebrating! Open the Google homepage today and here’s the logo that you will find:
To celebrate this very special milestone, your local PBS station will be airing the Sesame Street 40th anniversary episode on November 10th. The special broadcast will feature a celebrity studded cast including Adam Sandler, Eva Longoria, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Cameron Diaz. In addition, Jason Mraz will sing a special version of “I’m Yours” with special lyrics dedicated to the Sesame Street celebration.
I couldn’t find a better version of the 40th anniversary preview, but there’s a sneak peek:
Dare I say, I’m kind of looking forward the the special episode?! There’s a little bit of something for everyone – for both parents and kids alike.
I don’t know about you… but I’m marking my calendar!
Have you heard? Fashion designer Stella McCartney is partnering with babyGap and GapKids on a Holiday collection!
Stella McCartney is known for her eco-friendly high fashion for women. Incidentally, she also happens to be the daughter of musician Paul McCartney, but she has established her name and brand over the years in the fashion scene.
According to a Gap press release, Stella McCartney says, “For years now I’ve wanted to create a collection for kids, it’s something I’ve often been asked about. I believe that this one off collaboration will be a great way for customers to be able to participate in the Stella McCartney brand. I believe that kids clothing should be more accessibly priced, which is particularly important at the moment given the current climate. It’s really exciting for us to do a boys and girls collection for the first time.”
Watch out for the 70 piece collection when it arrives on November 2nd at a babyGap and GapKids near you. What do you think about tot-size designer fashions?
It’s an understated online series called The Tamra Davis Cooking Show that is also featured in The Huffington Post. Watch an episode, and it feels like you’re hanging around your BFF’s home. She’s wearing sweats, her kids are squirmy, and they eat at the little kids’ table.
Tamra is a real, relatable mom who is calm, unassuming, down-to-earth. She cooks no fuss food that is easy to prepare but healthy, organic, and kid friendly.
Sure, she acts and sounds like your everyday suburban mom… except she happens to be one of the few sucessful female filmmakers in Hollywood (Billy Madison). Oh, she also happens to be the wife of Mike D – that’s right, one of the Beastie Boys. This cooking show is part of an interesting career arc for a talented Hollywood-power-player-turned-mom who has found a new way to express and share her very personal interests (family, food, and health) with a new audience.
And if you didn’t think it could get any better… this family cooks together! The cooking show clips are about 5 minutes each - perfect for busy people like us.
I love this family. Did I mention I love this cooking show!?
In a very public declaration (some would say “fiasco”), Kayne expressed his high regard for the Beyonce video as “one of the best videos of all time”. Apparently, this baby agrees.
